BACKGROUND
MotherWoman's mission is to support and empower mothers to create personal and social change. Our core philosophy is that when mothers are strong and supported, families and communities thrive.
Founded in 1999, MotherWoman has an active and engaged board of directors and a very competent, passionate, talented team. MotherWoman is a respected emerging leader in our field. Revenue has increased from $82,500 in 2008 to $284,000 in 2012, and we anticipate this rate of growth will continue. 2013 budget is $345,000.
MotherWoman serves all mothers and families in the four counties of Western MA by:
- Supporting and Empowering Mothers - We train diverse professionals and community leaders to facilitate MotherWoman Support Groups (MSGs) in the communities they serve and live. There are currently eleven MSGs in Western MA. In 2012 we trained facilitators in New England, New Jersey and Seattle.
- Building community safety nets for mothers and families who are struggling in the postpartum period - MotherWoman developed the Community-based Perinatal Support Model (CPSM). We train medical, mental health and social service providers about the risks of post-partum depression, early detection and screening. To date, we've trained over 1,700 professionals in our region and beyond. The quality of these trainings has led to requests from as far away as California, New Jersey, Seattle and Washington, DC.
The CPSM also develops county-based Perinatal Support Coalitions comprised of multi-disciplinary professionals working together to resolve gaps in services to mothers and families. Coalitions meet monthly in Franklin, Hampshire and Berkshire Counties, and we work closely with existing initiatives in Hampden County. - Impacting family policy - Educating mothers, fathers, caregivers and legislators about the impact of state and federal policies on families. We engage them in taking action to make it easier to raise a family while earning a living. Related policy issues include paid maternity/paternity leave, earned paid sick time and paycheck fairness. In 2012, MotherWoman received the MA Nonprofit Network Excellence Award for Advocacy.
